I am pregnant, can I use essential oils?
If you've had a history of miscarriages in the past it is recommended not to use EO's during pregnancy. It's generally advised to avoid the use of essential oils topically during the first trimester. After the first trimester you can use the following essential oils at a 1% dilution: Geranium, neroli, ylang ylang, petitgrain, frankincense, sandalwood, patchouli, lavender, chamomile, mandarin, lemon, grapefruit, orange, black pepper, cypress, ginger & pine.
***If you are unsure, contact your health care professional or stick to gentle inhalation or avoid all together***
I am breastfeeding, can I use essential oils?
You can use the same essential oils listed in the pregnancy section at the same 1% dilution. If you are applying them topically on/around your breasts, be sure to wash before nursing to ensure babe does not ingest or get any in/near their eyes
What essential oils can I use on my newborn/infant?
Babies sense of smell is VERY sensitive. Be cautious on which oils you are using on/near them, pls refer to dilution guideline above. For baby massage, add 1 drop Roman Chamomile to 30ml of carrier oil. For babe's under 6 months, you can add 1-2 drops of either neroli, rose, lavender, roman chamomile or mandarin to a diffuser (& can use these oils diluted topically from 2-6 months). After 6 months you can add an extra drop to the diffuser. Do not diffuse for long periods of time, especially in small rooms with babies. It could cause them to become more cranky than actually helping to calm them. Restless babe, try 1 drop on the jammies. For colic, dilute 2 drops of R. Chamomile or Lavender in 1 tsp carrier and massage clockwise for 5min.
Can I ingest essential oils?
While many people following holistic health practices do ingest oils, Canadian law stipulates we cannot recommend the use of essential oils internally.
What quality of essential oils do you use?
I use pure, therapeutic quality, organic essential oils. Currently there is no governing body which regulates the various qualities of essential oils, but there are definitely varying qualities in essential oils. I only use the essential oils which are not: re-distilled, adulterated, diluted or extended. I will only obtain first distillation, organic, certified organic or wild harvest essential oils.
Recently I created a line of perfume oil blends in which I use non-organic essential oils & absolutes. Purely for the enjoyment of the scent & for spiritual/meditation work. I list these in their own category and clearly indicate that they are not organic.
